MEP Scholarship Application & Database

Be eligible for one of our industry-sponsored and MEP scholarship opportunities throughout the academic year. We'll refer to this database each time we award industry-sponsored or MEP scholarships.

Please note:

  1. Students have the opportunity to submit a new application each quarter if they'd prefer.
  2. The majority of our industry-sponsored scholarships are awarded in fall quarter.
  3. Students must be paid members of SHPE and NSBE to be eligible for club-specific scholarships.
  4. In an effort to be equitable and maximize scholarship support, students will only receive one scholarship a year. MEP STAR students are not eligible for MEP Success scholarships.
  5. The MEP Team will prioritize students with urgent financial needs in our review process.

How to Prepare a Strong Scholarship Application

Applying for scholarships can be a detailed and time-consuming process, but careful preparation and attention to detail can greatly enhance your chances of success. Here are some key factors to consider:

What Type of Scholarship is it?

Scholarships come in various forms, such as merit-based, need-based, or field-specific awards. Understanding the type of scholarship will help tailor your application to meet the specific criteria and stand out to the selection committee.

MEP Scholarships are Need-Based.

What Do you Need to Prepare?

Scholarship applications may require a range of documents so make sure you know what is being asked of you, some documents can be as follows:

  • Transcripts: Ensure you have official copies of your academic records.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Request these well in advance from teachers, mentors, or employers who can attest to your qualifications and character.
  • Personal Statement or Essays: Reflect on your experiences, achievements, and goals. (Required for our MEP Scholarships)
  • Resume: Highlight relevant experiences, skills, and accomplishments.
  • Financial Information: For need-based scholarships, gather necessary financial documents. (Suggested for our MEP Scholarships)

*For our MEP Scholarships no documentation is required but can help in the review*

How Much Time Do You Have to Submit the Scholarship?

It's crucial to be aware of the deadline for each scholarship. Create a timeline to manage your time effectively and avoid last-minute stress. Start early to allow ample time for gathering materials, writing essays, and obtaining recommendations.

Please see the deadlines above for our specific MEP Scholasrhips.

What Should you Include in Your Personal Statement?

Prompt, Prompt, and the Prompt

It’s important to keep in mind the prompt of the essay, the questions they are asking you, and the information they are looking for. Carefully read and analyze the essay prompt to understand what the scholarship committee wants to learn about you. Address all parts of the prompt directly and thoroughly.

MEP Scholarships Prompt:

Please submit a personal statement that is no longer than a single-spaced page and includes the following:

1. Challenges or obstacles you may have encountered before or during your time at Cal Poly that have impacted your ability to be academically successful

2. Explanation of how the scholarship would be used to address your current financial situation (please include examples)

Keep the Reviewer In Mind

Real people review your applications, and you want to make sure it’s easy for them to read and follow your story. Here are some tips:

  • Clarity and Conciseness: Write clearly and stay focused on the prompt. Avoid unnecessary jargon and lengthy tangents.
  • Structure: Organize your essay with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph should flow logically to the next.
  • Personal Touch: Share personal anecdotes and experiences that highlight your strengths and qualities relevant to the scholarship.
  • Proofreading: Ensure your essay is free of grammatical and spelling errors. Consider asking someone else to review it for clarity and coherence.
  • Additional Considerations:
    • Relevance: Highlight your achievements, experiences, and goals that align with the scholarship's purpose and criteria.
    • Authenticity: Be genuine in your writing. Authenticity can be very compelling and help you stand out among other applicants.
    • Passion and Commitment: Convey your enthusiasm and dedication to your field of study or career goals. Demonstrating a clear vision for your future can make a strong impression.

Cal Poly Cares

MEP also partners with Cal Poly Cares in an effort to support our MEP students who may experience high, unexpected financial need. The Cal Poly Cares Grant Program provides an opportunity for you to apply and receive temporary financial support if you are unable to afford expenses core to your ongoing success, including housing and meals, academic supplies and materials, personal care items, professional clothing and unplanned emergencies.
