David Cantu, Director
Mr. Cantu earned Bachelor's and M.S. degree in Biology and also holds an M. of A. in Counseling and Guidance. He has over twenty years of experience in higher education, of which 15 years has been in the delivery of services to low-income and underrepresented students. Mr. Cantu's varied educational background includes science curriculum development for high school students, as well as the development of college courses for undecided students and orientation course for new transfer students. While director of the Multicultural Engineering Program, Mr Cantu has implemented and operated a local pre-college outreach program for the last six years for middle school and high school underrepresented students. Mr. Cantu is also involved at the national level as the Linkage Coordinator with Synthesis: The National Engineering Education Coalition, a project funded by the National Science Foundation. The Linkage thrust area is concerned with the introduction of engineering curricular material at the community college and pre-college level in order to increase the participation and retention rates of underrepresented minority students, women and the disabled in engineering disciplines (K- 16). Mr. Cantu has belonged to a number of professional organizations and is the President of the National Association of Minority Engineering Program Administrators (1996-1998). He is also the advisor to the Cal Poly Chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.
